We all experience fear at some point. And although it is a distressing, negative sensation it is a basic survival mechanism which occurs in response to a perceived danger or threat. It is essential for your survival and is designed to keep you safe.
However, a phobia is a persistent irrational fear of an object or a situation that is generally considered harmless. Accompanying the fear is a strong desire to avoid the feared object or situation which can make it difficult to function normally in everyday life. The emotional reaction is often so strong that it overwhelms all rational thought. This often leaves you feeling embarrassed and silly. Consequently many phobic’s resist seeking help or even discussing their condition.
